Synopsis:
Step into the world of Roland Hayes, a young boy growing up at the turn of the century. Little Ro' is intelligent, kind-hearted, passionate, and fun-loving. His captivating voice, vibrant personality, and sharp wit inspire those around him. Little Ro' loves to sing and dance, especially when it comes to the Spirituals, powerful religious songs that helped African American ancestors endure their struggles.
Join Little Ro' as he takes you on an adventure through his neighborhood and community, introducing you to his family and friends while sharing new folk songs. In this series, you'll learn about the origins of religious folk songs, explore the early years of American society, and delve into real stories from Roland Hayes himself, all through the perspective of a twelve-year-old boy.
The titles of the books are inspired by Roland Hayes' songbook collection called "30 of My Favorite Spirituals." These short stories aim to make the history of spirituals accessible to children, providing valuable lessons and historical context from a pivotal period in American history, approximately 30-35 years after the Emancipation Proclamation during the era of segregation and Jim Crow Laws.
